Wagons may be the oldest body style but have come a long way since the horse-drawn carriage and stagecoach. The station wagon are based on a sedan body with the passenger area extended to the rear window. Differing from a hatchback, the car remains at its full high all the way to the rear of the car where a hatchback would slope in the rear. Hatchbacks also traditionally have no windows in the cargo area which a station wagon does. A station wagon is clearly car by its car-like features in front, which an SUV or Minivan have distinctly different forward designs. Station wagons have declined with the emergence of the Minivan in the 1980s and 90s. More recently models such as the Subaru Outback have seem increased popularity as small sportier wagons that usually cost less than an SUV or Minivan.
